# Demon Copperhead

by Barbara Kingsolver (2022)

**Verdict:** Stayed with me — It lodged, whether or not you'd inflict it on a friend.

**Who I'd hand it to:** People who love rich settings

## Fingerprint

Positions between two named poles. Neither pole is the good end.

- Place: far toward "the place is the book"
- Moral weight: toward "just a story"
- Cleverness: between "the form does the work" and "told straight"
- Lift: toward "left me heavier"
- Friction: toward "reads itself"
- Economy: toward "compressed"

_Scored from memory, some time after reading._

## How it read

How much I wanted to keep reading, at each stage.

- Beginning: eager
- Middle: steady
- End: couldn’t stop
- Afterwards: rose (better in retrospect)

## Review

An uncomfortable topic of rural poverty. There were so many pictures of good people living a hard tack life figuring out how to care for each other in rural america.
